Marks and Spencer is to open a new store at retail park in Basildon which will create 60 full tiem and part time job vacancies.
Marks and Spencer will create around 60 jobs when it opens a new store at the Mayflower Retail Park in Basildon next month.
The store, which will be 9,000 sq ft in size, will focus exclusively on food and will also offer a large cafe and in-store bakery. The cafe will serve a range of snacks and refreshments, including fair-trade tea and coffee. The site will be an additional presence to the company’s current store in the town centre.
A local councillor who focuses on town regeneration stated that the new jobs would be good news and that the investment by such a large business as Marks and Spencer sent the right message to other companies who may be considering opening in Basildon.
Concern was initially expressed that the store would encourage shoppers to go out of town but this was lessened on the news that the proposal was for a Simply Food store.
The new store’s manager stated that Marks and Spencer is delighted to be opening in Basildon and creating employment for local people. Other businesses also gave a positive reaction to the empty unit being filled, although the Simply Food store is close to a large Tesco supermarket.
The hope is that the new store will bring in additional customers to the retail park.
