Fixed priced retailer Poundland recently announced its plans to open a store in Grimsby sparking anticipation that several jobs could be created by the move.
A likely location for the potential premises could well be the vacant Somerfield unit in Osborne Street, one of very few sites capable of fufilling the 22-year old firm’s specifications.
Letting agents Scotts, who handle the lease on the unit would neither confirm nor deny whether it will be located there.
Poundland, which has its headquarters in the West Midlans, sells a range of household and seasonal products, and opened its 400th store in April this year.
Turnover has been up more than 21 per cent in the past financial year reaching £780 million perhaps a factor leading to the latest potential expansion.
Poundland’s trading director, David Crown said the store had “grown significantly” over the past year and remarked that the Grimbsy expansion was “fantastic to see”.
He stated “We’re looking forward to opening our doors!”
The chain was awarded the 2011 Discount Retailer of the Year title and welcomes four million customers through its doors each week.
