Who needs a student visa?
Everyone entering Australia are required to have a visa except:
(a) citizens of New Zealand travelling on New Zealand passports;
(b) transit passengers continuing their journey to a third country
within 8 hours of arrival, provided holding valid onward or return
documentation and not leaving the transit lounge.
The above restrictions apply for natinoals of the following countries:
EU countries, Brunei, Canada, Fiji, Indonesia, Japan, Kiribati, Korea
(Rep. of), Liechtenstein, Malaysia, Malta, Marshall Islands, Federated
States of Micronesia, Nauru, New Zealand, Norway, Papua New Guinea,
Philippines, Samoa, Singapore, Solomon Islands, South Africa,
Switzerland, Thailand, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, USA and Zimbabwe.
To have a student visa for Australia you must satisfy the visa requirements and
comply with a number of visa conditions for attendance and academic
performance which come into effect after you have entered Australia.
Your student visa will list the conditions that apply specifically to
you. It is important to comply with your visa conditions to avoid visa
cancellation.
General Australia Visa Requirements;
Your character must be good,
Your health must be good,
You must have acceptable health insurance through the Overseas Student
Health Cover (OSHC) for yourself and members of your family unit accompanying
you to Australia,
You must have no debt which is outstanding debts to the Commonwealth of
Australia, or have made arrangements acceptable to the Minister to repay such a
debt,
Where you are under 18 years of age, acceptable arrangements for your
accommodation, support and general welfare are in place,
Australian Visa Conditions
When you have Australian Student Visas then you agree agree with conditions below:
You must satisfy attendance and course requirements and maintain a valid
enrolment for your course
You must not work unless you have been granted permission to do so
You must maintain your Overseas Student Health (OSHC) cover while in
Australia
You must leave Australia before your visa expires, otherwise your visa may be revoked.
You must remain with the education provider you originally enrolled with for
the first 12 months of your course or, if the course is less than 12 months,
for the duration of your course
You must advise your education provider of your residential address within
seven days of your arrival in Australia and must advise any changes of address
within seven days
If you change education provider you must inform your current education
provider within seven days of issue of an eCoE
If you are an unaccompanied student applicant under 18 years of age you must
obtain written approval of your education provider before you change your
address, support and welfare arrangements in Australia.
Evidences for your Visa Application
When you apply for your student visa, you will be asked some information and
those information must have evidences as well:
- You must be able to buy your airline tickets; your
capacity to cover the cost of air fares, course fees and living costs for
the duration of your stay in Australia
- You must be able to speak English;your
level of English language proficiency in relation to that required for
your assessment level and education sector of study
- Your personal finance should be enough for the cost of return to your own country;the
situation in your home country e.g. personal or financial commitments that
may prompt you to return to your home country
- Your academic record must be good;your
academic record and history in the context of the course you intend to
study
- Your visa hsitory must be clean;your
immigration history previous
compliance with immigration laws and whether you have previously applied
for entry to Australia
- Whether
your proposed course of study is what you might reasonably have chosen
given your circumstances
- Whether
your proposed course is consistent with, and appropriate to, your current
level of education
What is an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) visas:
The ETA is an electronic visa which will have no visible label in the passport and there is no need to complete an application form. It has replaced tourist visas and is is suitable for tourist or business visits and allows multiple entries to Australia for a stay of up to 3 months on each entry.
ETAs can be obtained from most travel agents and some airlines. ETAs are also available from Australian Embassies, High Commissions and Consulates, but travellers should note that long queues and processing delays may be experienced at those outlets if applying in person. To check which travel agents and airlines are authorised to issue ETAs, travellers should contact their travel agent or BP Travel Trade Services.
Students intending to complete courses of study lasting less than 12 weeks, and between 15-25 hours a day may only require a tourist visa (or ETA).
