Can my wife or husband and children come with me?
Generally, your husband, wife or dependant children who intend to travel with you to Australia may be included in your application for a student visa and be processed for visa entry at the same time. You and they must undergo a medical examination and hold health cover insurance amongst other things.

If your family unit members decide to come to Australia after you have arrived, they will have to apply separately. They may also require you to nominate them for entry.

Will I need to have an interview?
Once the immigration officer has reviewed your application, they decide if an interview is necessary. If so, the visa officer will provide details of the time and place.

Will I need a medical examination?

You and anyone traveling with you will need to have a medical examination if:

  1. you need to apply for a visa and you will be in Canada for more than six months;
  2. you will be studying or working in a school, hospital or some other facility where it is important to protect public health.

What happens if I make a mistake on my application?

If you make a mistake on your application, it may be delayed or returned to you unprocessed.

Anyone who is found to have previously studied or worked in Canada without authorization can be refused a permit to study.

What happens when I arrive in Canada?
When you arrive in Canada, the immigration officer at the port of entry will determine whether you may enter Canada and how long you may stay. You must leave Canada on or before the date set by the immigration officer or have your status extended by an immigration officer in Canada.

May I change schools?
You must be in attendance of an approved type of institution. Whether or not you may change schools depends on the Terms and Conditions attached to your Student Authorization. You are generally allowed to switch fields of study and the institution within a degree or diploma program. If you wish to change from one type of educational institution or from a degree or diploma program to another, however, you are required to obtain a new authorization. In case of doubt, phone your nearest Canada Immigration Call Centre in Canada to obtain clarification.

May my children attend school?

Your dependent children may be able to study in Canada. Before attending classes, you must apply for and obtain a student authorization for your children. Phone the nearest Canada Immigration Call Centre in Canada for an application.

May I leave Canada and return?
Yes. However, should your student authorization expire while you are out of Canada, you may not be allowed to return to study. An immigration officer at the port of entry will decide if you still meet the requirements for admission.

If you initially required a visitor visa in addition to a student authorization, you will be able to return to Canada providing your visa, passport and student authorization are all valid.

How do I obtain an extension of my student authorization?
Foreign students may renew their study permits. They can apply as early as 90 days before, but no later than 90 days after their permit expires. In addition, they must have observed all the conditions of that permit and not be in breach of the Act.

Consequences for violations:
CIC officers can refuse to issue study permits to people who have previously studied or worked in Canada without authorization.
