How long does it take to process the application?
It usually takes 6-8 weeks to process the application and you should apply within good time to ensure your departure date is not delayed. However your application must be received no earlier than 3 months before you anticipated arrival date into the UK.
How do I apply?
You can apply in a number of different ways, for example online, by post or in person at your nearest British Mission Overseas. To see if you can apply online visit www.visa4uk.fco.gov.uk
You will need to complete visa application forms VAF1 – Non settlement which you can obtain from www.ukvisas.gov.uk. You can also get the forms from your nearest UK Overseas Mission where there is a visa section.
How much will it cost to apply?
This varies with nationality but is usually about £35.00 paid in the local currency.
How long will the visa be valid for?
Student visas are normally granted for an initial period of one year, usually determined by the length of the course to be studied. If you arrive in the UK with a student visa or prospective student visa these can usually be extended during your stay if you extend the length of course.
Where can I travel in the UK?
Once you have arrived in the UK a passport is not required for travel between Great Britain and Ireland, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man.
For travel from UK to the Republic of Ireland you are advised to hold return tickets to avoid delay and interrogation.
What happens once I make my application?
An Entry Clearance Officer will confirm that they have all the information that is required to make a decision. You may be asked to return to supply further information before your application is approved.
Once your application has been accepted you may have to be interviewed.
