Tips while Studying Abroad
While studying abroad, the idea of traveling around Europe came past my mind a long time ago. I have long dreamed of having a European escapade, and so I've taken it into reality. Finally, after my second year in University, I took two months to fulfill my dreams. To do such, I skipped spending much money, got some good reads on guidebooks, and was pretty much confident that I could stay with my travel for fifty dollars a day. I have long thought of staying in inexpensive hostels, taking glimpse of tourist spots and eating two full sumptuous meals daily.
However, Europe was more than I ever expected. I devoured myself on cappuccinos and pastries at sidewalk cafes, and ate every bit of delightful foods each country has. By then, I called back home to lend me some money.
Even if I dumped myself on my two-meal diet daily, thoughts flashed on my mind that I came exceedingly over my former budget for food. I met many student travelers who boast themselves of just taking bread and four-dollars of wine. They seemed to have starved yet this may have been the only way to go forth with such budget.
After some years of traveling, I came into a realization that simple rules can be done just to satisfy one's need on eating while spending less but also enjoying delectable delicacies abroad.
AVOID TOURIST TRAPS
Undoubtedly, restaurants for tourists seem to believe that all tourists have money. Kim O'Connor, a teacher and student in Finland, looks for ways to survive traveling on a strict budget. He says that when he travels, he stays away from restaurants geared towards the tourist trade and just takes a walk to seek for possible dinner houses. Seek for advice from locals but make it vivid that you are on a stiff budget. So that you may not be led to an expensive eating place, simply ask a local the question, “Where do you eat?”
TAKE ADVANTAGE OF HOSTELS
If you would like to grasp some authentic cuisine on a strict budget, better take advantage on the continental breakfasts offered at hostels. Danielle Belsham, a tour guide in France, answers query on how to enjoy cuisine without spending much by suggesting hostels' great deals. Youth hostels are indeed a traveler's great pal for they do not only give you continental breakfast but also provide you a kitchen that can be used. When you need advice on where to eat cheap yet satisfying meals, hostel staff and crew can also be sought of help.
SEEK OUT STUDENT SERVICES
Restaurants within campuses often give great worth to your dollar with a wide selection of foods at inexpensive costs. University of Helsinki student, Salla Porra, states that university restaurants are ideal for they offer large portions. She adds that such restaurants are located in central places and you may eat there even without a student card. She also suggests students to get in touch with their International Student's office to find restaurants who give student discounts.
TRY LOCAL CUISINE
Learn how commoners live when you're in a certain place to bring out the value of your dollar. As they say, “When in Rome do as the Romans do”. Don't dare to hesitate trying staple foods from different places. When you're in London, eat Cornish pastries or pub food. When you're in France, check out breads and cheeses. In Italy, eat some pizzas and pasta. By such, you get to enjoy your travel and as well as save some bucks.
HAVE A PICNIC
Get to enjoy the breeze of local markets common in all parts of the world. Splurge on some fresh local vegetables, fish, or meat that may truly equate on your tight traveler's budget. While in Tuscany, you may get into the groove and go buy some cheese, fresh bread, tomatoes, and a bottle of Chianti. Take a picnic and munch them all up while watching the sun set up on a hill.
Indulging on foods in a tight budget doesn't incur your to limit the wonderful times you may have while studying abroad. Keep in mind that budgeting means that of treating yourself once in a while. Taking in some nice coffee as you glare upon the Eiffel Tower will be such a nice treat after class. By then, you'd notice how delectable the breeze of your coffee is - sweeter than ever.
