Travel Safely with ISIC
True enough that it is uneasy to travel around with a student budget, but thanks to the International Student Travel Confederation (ISTC), they are ready to aid travelers to make their journeys smooth and right on the budget. Yearly, they issue over 4.5 million International Student Identity Cards (ISIC) that give students internationally recognized identification to manifest their student status and elite discounts and services in over a hundred countries.

With the commendation given by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the ISIC caters special mark-down rates to cardholders from airlines, railways, bus and shipping lines, local retailers, historic and cultural institutions and accommodation providers.

ISIC does not only give student discounts on travel and accommodation, but also it lets members access the system of over 5,000 student travel organizations worldwide for information on local ISIC benefits and services plus assistance if you have any problems while traveling. The ISIC also comes with a multilingual 24-hour Emergency Help Line that cover a lot of benefits such as medical, legal, student travel office referrals and emergency message handling to communicate and converse with friends and family members.

ISIC can provide its cardholders with necessary accident and illness insurance for out-of-country journey when acquisition is done in the United States. The coverage of the said insurance involves hospital stays, emergency evacuation, accident medical expenses, baggage delay insurance, and passport protection.

With its mission of humanitarian service, ISIC gives off a bonus with its service called ISIConnect that caters to:

Discount rates on international long distance

As a final added bonus, ISIC also provides a service called ISIConnect that offers:

  •      discount rates on international long distance,
  •      voicemail for your family and friends to contact you while you travel,
  •      e-mail service that notifies you by telephone that you have mail before you go searching for a cyber café,
  •      online fax service, and
  •      encrypted online storage of your important documentation (credit cards, passport, and traveler's checks) in case of an emergency.
To purchase an ISIC, you must be a resident of the United States, at least 12 years old and studies full-time in your institution. You may need to submit a proof of your full-time enrolment such as a photocopy of your student ID card, a letter from your school registrar with the seal of the institution and approving full-time student status or a signed and sealed School Declaration and a photocopy of other ID picture. You may also need to submit a passport-sized photo of yourself to go on the front of the card.

Available either online or at your local branch of STA Travel (www.statravel.com) or Travel Cuts (www.travelcuts.com), a purchase of an ISIC takes you $22 US. The cards shall be valid by September to December of the following year which means a 16-month period of validity.

Contact your local issuing office or visit the ISTC website at www.istc.org for more information about ISIC.

Furthermore, if you're not a full-time student, part-time students and other youth under 25 years old are still qualified for many of the ISIC discounts with another ISTC card called the International Youth Travel Card (IYTC). Each card is available where an ISIC card is sold for only $22 US.
