In many new situation, it is so natural to be worried or concerned about issues regarding health and safety. Study abroad provides special challenges to participants who are in unfamiliar environments, far from loved pnes who provide guidance and support when things go wrong. There is a detail here that there is no evidence say that a study abroad experience presents any greater risk than studying in any university or college in the U.S.. However, the issues that arise may be different from issues that student are used to managing in the U.S.. The most important factor that influences how big a student's risk will be is the behavior of the student. But it is not the only factor. Safety overseas is a cooperative venture, with responsibilities shared by the program Provider, the participants, and their parents or guardians. We will offer advice and suggestions for avoiding risk by reviewing responsibilities of each group. Many of the suggestions put forward come from the Interorganizational Task Force on Safety and Responsibility during Study Abroad. Since it was founded in 1996, this special task force has met several times to discuss ways to enhance the safety and decrease risks for students participating in study abroad programs.
