Probably way too late now, but I would have phrased it something along the lines of

“Dear
Thankyou for the .  I agree it was very disappointing news as I was looking forward to working for your company.  Please could I ask you to forward some feedback as to why I was not sucessful this time, as it then gives me something to work on for future interviews

– keeps it short, polite and makes them see you are really interested in why you didnt get it
