I think it totally depends on who you are, what you do, and who you do it for. A high flying exec in a large company can command a higher rise than a similarly qualified person working for a small business. Plus, if you earn, for example £20k per year, asking for a £5k payrise is a bit unrealistic. Asking for a £1k payrise maybe more achievable!
