I would agree that the first impression is most important. If you create a bad one, you are not likely to be taken seriously during the interview. I wouldnt say a suit was always needed, so long as you have a smart skirt and blouse and a jacket for women, or trousers and shirt and tie and jacket for a man. Agree with no loud colours on the blouse/shirt and certainly no funny or festive ties!
