As an account manager, you will be in charge of the department that handles the financial side of the business.  Your role is to oversee the team that manages the financial records and accounts for the business.  An ideal person for an account manager role is someone who likes working with facts and figures and can process the information effectively.  You will need good communication skills and written skills. There will be a lot of paperwork to process, examine, amend and create reports about so you should be analytical and able to solve problems easily and methodically.

As an account manager you may have worked your way up from accounts clerk or applied directly for the position.  You should possess or be looking to study for the AAT Accounting Qualification. You will need to demonstrate good English and Maths skills, an interest in finance and the ability to understand banking and finance ways and terminology. Most accounting is completed on computers so you would need to be computer literate and trained in your business packages.

    Starting salary: £18,000 – £22,000
    Experienced salary: £22,000 – £25,000
    Senior salary: £25,000 – £35,000

Fairly good starting salary for this job. Communication skills are definitely very important for a manager, and sometimes you might be required to delegate etc.

The salary for senior managers does seem quite good, and if you’re interested in managing and can spend the time working your way up, you could reap the rewards.
