Hi all ive just recently been sanctioned for 2 weeks for failing to attend a work programme appointment due to being unwell.
I recieved a letter explaining my sanction and that i had a chance to appeal the decision if unfair.
I filled in the appeal form at the job centre explaining why i couldnt attend the appointment and now ive had a letter back asking for more information about why i didnt attend and theyve given me 1 month to reply.Thing is now this whole appeal seems like its going to be lengthy and ongoing and when i think about it the 2 week sanction is going to be long gone before any decisions are made so now ive decided to drop the appeal because it just seems a waste of time.
However it says on my letter that its in my best interest to respond otherwise i may lose benefit. Now this is where im confused, does this mean i face further sanctioning if i dont respond to this letter ? Because i was told at job centre that appealing doesnt affect your benefit, now im given a letter saying it does, or if i just leave it past a month will it automatically be dropped. Somebody help!!

Obviously I haven’t seen the letter or been given the full details of your case… but I would expect that the Job Centre is correct and the appeal will not affect your benefits. The letter is probably a standard letter and has that note on the bottom to encourage you to reply in a timely manner.
If you have decided to drop the appeal you should respond to the appeal letter confirming to that department that you have dropped the appeal and accepted the original decision for a 2 week sanction.

I agree, I would just reply to the letter saying you have decided not to continue with the appeal (i dont think you even have to give a reason), but if you want to just say something along the lines of you feel that the process will be too long winded and wish to draw a line underneath it
ps – when you “missed” the original date, did you phone in to explain you were ill?
I’m not an expert on this at all, but I’d suggest talking to somebody at the job centre about your worries and concerns about this. It does sound a bit confusing, and I wouldn’t like to lead you along the wrong path.
