ASDA has announced that it has submitted a planning application for its first supermarket on the Isle of Wight.
The 45,000 sq ft shop in Newport will comprise of a café and petrol station, as well as George clothing and a wide range of groceries and home ware on offer. Green technology and a landscaping plan play a major part of the development. The plans include improved landscaping, including more trees, solar panels on the roof and wind cowls to provide natural exposure to air into the store.
The planned store is expected to generate up to 450 jobs for the town and it is thought even more will be created through the construction process.
If the plans get the green light there will also be electric charging points for cars – a first for the Isle of Wight.
The proposal been given plenty of support from the local community; with open evenings for the public to view the plans proving a big success. As well as the boost to the Island’s economy through the generation of such a large number of jobs, the general feedback from the public showed a real desire to have an ASDA store on the Island.
