Concerns that New Tesco Express in Blythe Bridge will lead to job losses in community.
The new Tesco Express store which is due to open early next year on the former Duke of Wellington pub site on Uttoxeter Road is expected to create 20 jobs for the local population.
However, members of the Blythe Bridge Parish Council have raised concerns that the introduction of the store will lead to job losses in other local shops.
The store did not require full planning permission but was required to submit an application to Staffordshire Moorlands District Council for an extension to the building and additional equipment which was approved earlier this month. The approval came as a disappointment to many on the Parish Council and local residents who feel let down by the District Council, but the approval for planning was likely to be granted to avoid the site becoming derelict.
Other concerns have been raised about additional traffic problems for the junction near the site.
A Tescos express store does not necessarily mean that other local shops will lose business – it depends on what sort of shop they are! As an example, in the village we have a Tescos express, next door we have a hair dressers, a chinese, a fish and chip shop, a florist/gift shop and a Horse stockist shop (no it doesnt sell horses)
Non of these are loosing business, in fact they are thriving
I know that in many towns, the introduction of a superstore meant the local businesses weren’t doing as well. This is a problem that can only really be solved by the local people when they stop buying every last thing from the supermarket. This usually only happens in places that aren’t very busy, but as long as smaller businesses keep up a very good reputation and have good customer service, there shouldn’t be many big issues.
I can definitely understand why jobs might be lost though.
