Clarence House has advised us all that Prince William is marrying Kate Middleton on Friday 29th April 2011 and it has been decreed that this will be a Bank Holiday.

Trusts have told unions they are not prepared to pay staff extra for working on the royal wedding bank holiday in April.

Normally, nurses could expect to receive 60% more pay than usual for working on a bank holiday. However, NHS Employers, which represents trusts in negotiations with unions, is proposing to pay staff at normal rates on 29 April.

The day has been declared a public holiday to celebrate the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton.

Following feedback from trusts, NHS Employers has told the NHS Staff Council there will be no national agreement to give additional payments at enhanced rates.

Instead, it has proposed that anyone working on 29 April will receive a day off in lieu, while everyone else will have a day’s paid annual leave.

Royal College of Nursing head of employment relations Josie Irwin said: “It’s declared a public holiday and therefore NHS staff required to work on the day should be paid the enhancements appropriate to a public holiday.

“Across the UK, people will be enjoying the day with their families – and that’s why the enhancements are paid, to compensate staff who are required to staff essential services.”

So what do you think about it? Will you get paid for this day off? Before arranging anything like buying lots of drink you should really find out whether its worth or not.. have your say…
