If you apply for a Dundee City Council job, you are guaranteed an interview, if you are disabled that is. In the Tayside area, the Employment Disability Unit was created to assist people with disabilities. It is a collaboration of Dundee City Council, Perth and Kinross Council and Angus Council. Its name was later shortened to the Employment Unit, because it also provided service to non-disabled people. But it still maintains the premise that people with health problems or disabilities are less likely to find work. But does this mean that people with disabilities will be favoured over abled bodied candidates? Well, there’s no indication that is the case. It can be argued that getting to the interview is the hardest part of a job search. But the interview is where the candidate is given the chance to convince the council’s interview panel that they are the right person to hire for the vacant position. So although disabled people are guaranteed an interview, at that stage, they will still have to compete with abled bodied people who also made it to that point.

Furthermore, the council website states it commitment to follow the Disability Discrimination Act (1995) by taking necessary steps to retain and redeploy persons with disabilities that it already has on staff. In keeping with the theme of giving disabled candidates a leg up, the council provides its application form and supporting documentation in formats like Braille, large print, and audio tape.

Like most other local authorities, the council doesn’t accept CVs as part of its selection process, so disabled or not, don’t send yours in if you apply for a Dundee City Council job. In fact, you would benefit from a visit to the council’s website and a look at the Job Application Guidance Notes page.

In researching for material for this article, I came across about 20 vacancy adverts for jobs with the council. I notice most of these postings are related to either education or housing. But the council employs a myriad of occupations associated with other services.

A short list of examples of jobs within the council may include cooks, arborist, engineers, Librarians, childcare assistants, driver escorts, and gardeners. As a matter of fact, the council is perhaps the largest employer in the city.

So, it may be worth the while to apply if you think you have what they are looking for. It would be nice if you could fill an application and send it in for any future openings that you qualify for, but unfortunately the council’s personnel department doesn’t keep application forms for future reference. Each job advert has a reference number that pertains to the particular posting, so you’ll have to apply for each job separately. If you are applying for a teaching or other school related positions, you should note that the application process is a bit different. For one thing, you’ll need to fill out a dedicated application form for a teaching appointment.

Whatever the position is that interest you, you are encouraged to apply online for all Dundee City Council jobs.
