An ambitious multi-million pound project to convert Shropshire’s historic Flax Mill would create up to 1,000 jobs if plans go ahead.

Hundreds of jobs would be created at the site in Shrewsbury if funding is approved in the next 12 months, with the first phase of work planned to be finished by 2015.

The overall regeneration project would create a vibrant place to work bringing around 1,000 new jobs to the area. Campaigners, Friends of the Flax Mill Maltings, hope to see businesses, arts groups, bars, restaurants and potentially homes created at the site if funding can be secured.

It is hoped £11.6 million can be obtained from the Heritage Lottery Fund, with up to £6 million potentially available from the European Regional Development Fund, as part of aims to secure the money needed for the first phase of the project.

It is planned to be a massive source of regeneration for Castlefields, Ditherington, northern Shrewsbury and the whole town, giving a much needed boost to the area and economy. The second stage application will be put forward in March and in June campaigners will learn if they have been successful.

It is hoped the development will also be a huge attraction for tourists, further boosting the local economy.

I really hope this gets the go ahead (and funding) – this will be great, as Flax is no longer manufactured here the old mills need to “do” something, and rather than pull them down and just do nothing (or stick up a load of houses!) to convert them to something useful is a brilliant idea
