IT Support Engineer salary and average pay rates UK.
An IT Support Engineer needs to love IT and be able to analyse and process technical information. A strong problem solving approach is needed and excellent communication skills. Your role will involve liaising with a customer and finding out what fault or problem they are experiencing. You will then need to identify the problem, fix it, test it and explain the situation to the user.
You should have a good understanding of all operating systems and hardware, software, networks and packages in order to be able to find the problem and solve it. You may also be needed to set up new equipment, services, systems or packages and test, service or upgrade these. You may have to roll out training on new software as well.
IT based qualifications are essential in this role although you may be able to train as a technician if you can show an aptitude for IT. Qualifications such as Level 3 BTEC or City and Guilds or OCR for IT Practitioners can help you secure employment as an IT Support Engineer. There are also apprenticeships available. Whichever route you take, you will need to keep up to date with new software and operating systems that are launched.
Starting salary: £18,000 – £22,000
Experienced salary: £30,000
