Hello Everyone!
I have worked all my life since I was 16 years old. Over 33 years I built up my career to become a director.
I lost my job just over 6 months ago and I am finding it hard to get another job at the same level I think due to my age.
Over the 6 months I have been claiming job seekers allowance and have increased my job search area and dramatically reduced my salary expectation in order to try and get a job.
At my recent signing on at the Job Centre they told me that they are changing my job seekers agreement and that I will have to take any job so long at it meets the minimum wage.
I am devastated by this news. I said if I took a job with a minimum age I will destroy my career totally. They did not care about this.
My questions are:-
1 – Are the allowed to do this?
2 – What can I do in order to avoid getting shoved into a minimum age job whilst I continue to look for suitable jobs
Any advice will be most welcome.
I’m not very helpful with this i’m afraid, but yes i think they are allowed to do it, it wont destroy your career, in fact it will show that you are “willing” to take anything and turn your hand to anything (at least this is in my view)
It is usually easier to find a different job if you are already in oneI think that they are allowed to do this, yes. There have been recent court cases where people have complained about being forced into voluntary work by the authorities but they can do whatever they like it seems! I feel that your only option is to deny yourself benefit and turn down the job or take the job and at least be doing something and earning some money. If you turn down the job, you could consider becoming self-employed as an alternative to looking for paid employment.
You do not say where you have been looking for jobs apart from the job centre but I would advise you to look at agencies as well. Post your CV on the big recruitment sites and go to agencies in your local town. You may be able to find some better paid temporary work which will at least help ends meet even if they do not give you the work experience you are looking for. Plus they will look better on your CV than being unemployed.
