You should wait until you are fully decided about not going back to work for your resignation letter.

Please accept this letter as formal notice that I wish to resign from my position as Telephone Support Adviser within ABC Solutions, with effect from the date above, as I am expecting a child, due on (insert date), and wish to spend time raising my young family.

I really wouldnt tender a resignation before going on maternity leave, as unless you can afford to do so they then don’t actually have to pay you maternity pay! – take your maternity leave and during that time if you have fully decided you are not returning to work (or to work with that company) then submit the resignation letter

Don’t decide before you’ve even had the baby what you want to do. Wait until you’ve had the baby and then decide whether you really should or should not go back to work.

You might find that circumstances have changed at the end of your maternity leave and it’s actually okay for you to go back to work. Certain things such as childcare problems are the main issues that stop new mothers going back to work.
