Boris Johnson has announced that a report has been issued to the Airports Commission to consider a proposal to build a new airport in the Inner Thames Estuary.  This has been brought about due to supply and demand and the London area not meeting the needs of the travellers and looking at what is best for the future of international travel.

If the proposal was to go ahead it would potentially create 400,000 new jobs in the UK and boost the economy by £7 billion. This has massive consequences for London’s long term future and they have been asked to consider this proposal carefully to benefit not only the unemployed but also the future international travel links and the economy for London and the UK as a whole.

In the report issued, it states that by building a new airport it would improve UK productivity and that it would add benefits rather than instead creating new runways at Heathrow and Gatwick which has also been discussed and thought about in recent months.

The disadvantages to building another runway at Heathrow would increase the noise pollution by one million people; where as a new airport in the Thames Estuary would expose less than 3% of the same number to the aircraft noises and also have an airport in a different location making it more accessible and usable for some. The studies have been done into this area and how much potential business having an airport there would create.

By building further at Heathrow or Gatwick, it is not seen as the answer as it does not reach the right capacity and that by having a new airport in a different location will serve a wider area and network of people making it a more positive addition to the London area and UK as a whole bringing in a better economy through travel.
