One of the supermarket giants will be opening their doors in an out of town new development in Ludlow. These plans will include creating 250 new jobs for local people.  The plans are still in progress and have already come under fire from one local councillor who has expressed his views about the problems of opening another store in Ludlow.

The company are looking to seek permission for a store which will be bigger than the local branch of Tesco in the town centre.  The store is said to be near the Eco Park just off the A49.

The property group are proposing to build a 26,000 square foot supermarket and petrol filling station and they have initially pass the “sequential test” which insists that supermarkets have to be built in town centres unless no sites are available and in Ludlow town centre there are not suitable sites as Tesco and Aldi in the town centre were already over trading so commercially there is room for another store.

The 250 new jobs that this supermarket will create will compromise of 1/3 of the roles being full time roles for local residents and workers to Ludlow creating a better local economy. An impact assessment which is now a legal requirement for new builds has not been conducted as of yet but this assessment will see what impact a store of its size and location would have on the town centre.

Some of the local councillors were not keen on another store in the area and said that by opening a new store of this size and in its location would kill the trade for the smaller stores in Ludlow and they were not happy for this to happen whilst some believe there is enough custom and competition to warrant a new store in the town.
