Should an online application form be treated any differently to a printed form?
Not really. With a hand written form you obviously need to be more aware of hand writing but the content should not change between the types of forms. It can be a good idea to proof read an online form even more because it is tempting to assume the spell check will sort out problems for you, when it may not.
