It has been shown in new official figures that only half of job vacancies at the BBC are advertised externally, with the rest always going to people already employed by the BBC. Thousands of jobs are solely advertised on the internal jobs website. Bosses have said that the policy to do this has been put in place in order to avoid staff redundancies, which may have come about due to restructuring within the company. However, recruitment experts have said that by doing this it means that they will restricting the talent base as it does not give the opportunity for others, who may be better qualified, to apply for roles in the company.

The company have been in trouble in the past when they offered jobs internally to senior executives which paid six figure salaries and they did not advertise these positions outside of the company. The Mail online have got hold of figures which show that only 52% of jobs are advertised externally and the rest are either not advertised at all or put on the internal website. Specifically figures show that from January 2013 to November 2014 there were 6766 vacancies and 3498 were advertised outside of the company.  The data was obtained through a Freedom of information request.

Recruitment in the company is dealt with by Capita and they organise the advertising of jobs on the BBC jobs website which is accessible externally as well as internally plus in newspapers. However, the jobs site has a internal only section where extra job vacancies are advertised. A BBC spokesman explained that jobs are advertised internally first and then if there are no suitable candidates it is advertised externally.
