Pfizer Site Jobs Creation by Discovery Park in Kent

The determined owners of the ex-Pfizer site in Sandwich, Kent have vowed to create 3,000 new jobs at the newly dubbed Discovery Park by 2017.

This latest announcement could be a major turning point in fortunes of the area, which in 2011 was hit with the shocking news that drugs company Pfizer would be pulling out of the 300-acre site, leaving over 2,000 jobs at risk.

But just over a year later, the area is gaining from the Expansion East Kent scheme – a £35m Regional Growth Fund project organised by Kent County Council with the aim to inject £300m into new private sector investment and creating thousands of jobs. Discovery Park has Enterprise Zone status, which offers incentives such as tax reliefs, encouraging companies to relocate there.

Discovery Park Limited, the syndicate that bought the site in August, is hoping to create 3,000 new jobs and is also looking to be a focus for academic institutions.

The company says it will encourage new tenants, with a focus towards government scientific bodies and technology companies.

Discovery Park is responsible for the triumph of Wynyard Park in Teesside, a once vacant 700-acre site which now has a flourishing business community providing 2,000 jobs.
