Is it worth paying a professional company to do my CV? I see adverts for them and wondered whether they were worth the money they charge. Has anyone used them? Can they recommend one?

I have never used one, but if you are not confident in your own abilities, then it could be worth it. There are a lot of tips online as to how to present a good CV and these could be enough to help you to do a good job without the need for professionals.

Perhaps it will be better to look at some tips and try to get mine to the best quality possible first. It is so hard to know whether these companies can provide something better. Maybe, I will take it along to the job centre and see if they can give me some professional pointers too.

You can download a lot of CV templates from the internet. These can be helpful with getting you started as they often contain specific sections for you to place your information, so you can have a think about what you can bring to each. In addition they will have the basics such as your job and education history as well as your personal details.

The best bit I find with using a template is that you can get some really nice layouts which are already done. Saving you the hassle of being creative trying to make it look good.

You don’t really need to pay, unless English isn’t your first language so you need somebody to check whether it’s accurate or not. You know your experience, and there are a lot of examples on the internet for you to make the most of. This should be enough. However, if you’re getting really stressed about it, you might find that it is helpful to hire somebody to help you with it, as at least you wouldn’t have to think about it.

    Hey Rachel,

Depending on how resourceful you are and how much time you have, paying for a well designed cover letter/resume may not be worth it. The beauty of professional services is that they do it quickly (compared to you doing it perfectly yourself). They also create a very nice design and know exactly what words to put down.

Now the problem is that if you decide to change career paths later on, you will have to pay another big amount to have your resume done for you. Everything that they have done for you, they do not explain – they just create a perfect version from what you had before and leave you there.

So only take this service if you are 100% confident that you will stick to this career path.

Nevertheless, there are other options available if you seek career help.

Me personally, I have worked with a company called Definitely Hired (definitelyhired.com) over the phone, and they perfected my resume/cover letter/interview over the phone while telling me exactly what I should have written down or not. This is beneficial for me because not only did I get the bank job that I wanted, but I also kept the information, and was able to help my friends in need without them having to pay.

I would strongly suggest looking into other ways, such as the company I dealt with (Definitely Hired), because out of thousands of resumes (that get THROUGH to the hiring manager after online screening), managers take a quick glance and move on – for which reason it is crucial to make your resume stand out.

    Best of luck!
