The development will be built on the site of the old Redcar Library between Kirkleatham Street and Coatham Road.
It will include a swimming pool and dance hall, and facilities for the community and local businesses.
Councillor Mark Hannon said: “This is a really exciting time for Redcar with over £75 million of investment in the town over the next 3 years. “
The new facility, which should be completed by December 2012, will include a swimming pool and leisure pool, dance hall and performance space, fitness suite and sports hall.

The facility, which is expected to create 260 job vacancies, will host a swimming pool and dance hall as well as providing usable community and business space. It is expected to be available for public use from early 2013 onwards.
