As part of a £75 million investment programme by the Royal Mail the company has announced that a new depot will be opened in Hampshire by 2014. Royal Mail plans to grow its express parcels business in the UK, which will create 150 new jobs in Hampshire and over1,000 new jobs across the UK.

The new depot will be opened in the county in the next two years, which will create the delivery and collection jobs.

The county has suffered a series of recently announced job cuts with Ford, British Gas, Skandia and B&Q all warning of significant job losses in the Southampton area, totalling around 2,000.

Despite the current economic climate Hampshire’s underlying economy remains strong and the council are currently looking for ways to increase inward investment, grow the regional economy and create the structures and initiatives for businesses to thrive.

The Royal Mail has not yet made a decision on the location of the new Hampshire depot.

In the last financial year, Royal Mail parcels business accounted for nearly half of its total revenues, excluding the Post Office. The increase is being driven by a rise in shopping on the internet, which grew by 20 per cent in the past year, and is expected to continue to grow in the foreseeable future.

Excellent news, I prefer to use Royal Mail for parcels as I have had bad experience with couriers lately.  If this means RM can directly compete (ie the next day, 3 working days service etc) with the couriers out there then all well and good
