Budget airline Ryanair has announced the expansion of its operations and has estimated it will create nearly 1,000 jobs at airports in Manchester, Liverpool and the East Midlands.
The company said it is hoping to carry an extra million passengers during next year and would be creating 460 new roles at East Midlands, 360 at Manchester and 180 at Liverpool. There are nine new routes planned from these airports and a further two aircraft will be added to cope with the demand.
The roles, for which the company is now recruiting, include engineers, pilots, cabin crew and baggage handling staff.
Ryanair believes the secret of their success is basing a higher number of aircraft at regional airports that are more convenient for their customers to fly from.
The announcement has been widely welcomed by both industry bosses and regional economists as a huge boost to the market, especially in the tourism and hospitality sectors.
The news is particularly welcome at East Midlands Airport, which suffered a major blow when BMI Baby closed and left the airport without one of its chief partners.
News that the airline intends expanding operations at all three airports highlights the significance of Europe’s low cost air carriers in the employment market.
