Company Overview: Sainsbury’s started in 1869 and now has 1,106 stores open nationwide. Their vision is to be the ‘most trusted retailer’ where people ‘love to work and shop’, maintaining high ethical and environmental standards. The company is very open about how they aim to achieve this, for example they aim to source their products such as chicken and fish responsibly whilst reducing their carbon footprint. They have reduced the amount of saturated fat in their foods and have also reduced salt and sugar. Further detail on this is provided in their 20×20 Sustainability Plan which is well worth a read prior to applying to work here.

Sainsbury’s sponsored the London 2012 Paralympic Games, becoming the first supermarket to ever sponsor an Olympic or Paralympic Games. They work closely with local farmers and growers, and have set up the Sainsbury’s Research and Development Grant which works to assist new developments and technologies in farming.

    How to apply

Their website http://www.sainsburys.jobs.co.uk has three main areas of focus: Discover, Develop and Apply.  The Discover section lists all of their main job types from Team Leader, to Baker to Counter Assistant. Clicking on each job type brings up a summary of what you can expect from that position, and their ‘Find a Job like this’ link brings you to a map showing where there are current vacancies and option to either carry out an advanced search based on location or to list all the available jobs. Clicking on each job title gives you a brief job description, location, hours of work and salary.

    Interview Advice

There are some helpful tips on the Sainsbury’s jobs website regarding how to fill out your application form and how to prepare for an interview. It will be very useful to read through this before applying, but to summarise they are looking for someone who has prepared and practised answers ahead of the interview. Ensuring that everything from your application form can be backed up with evidence and examples is key, so be honest on the application form.

They are looking for well-rounded individuals so think about your hobbies and commitments outside of work, and let your passion and enthusiasm for them shine through. It will also give you a chance to show that you are committed and engaged.

Come to the interview well presented and arrive on time, and keep in mind all of the skills required for the job position and how you have used those skills in the past.

    Salary

This is specified for each job position on their jobs website.

    Benefits

The benefits of working at Sainsbury’s include:

    • Staff discount in store
    • Pension and share save scheme
    • Childcare vouchers
    • Reduced gym membership and discounts on a variety of places of interest and shops

Sainsbury’s doesn’t provide a printable job application form.

    Good luck.
