Supermarket chain Sainsbury’s has announced that it will open one of its Local stores at a location previously occupied by a pub in Plymouth, creating 25 jobs in the process.

The store, which is the company’s first convenience branch in the city, will cater for the significant student population in the Mutley Plain area and others who just need to pop in for a quick ready meal for dinner or for a few groceries.  Renovation work on the site is scheduled to will begin next month and the store is expected to open to local customers at some point in the spring of 2013.

There are more than 300 Sainsbury’s Local stores across the UK, designed to compete with the likes of the smaller Co-operative food stores and other convenience brands such as Tesco Express.

A spokesperson for Sainsbury’s indicated that the company was looking at other potential sites for further convenience stores in Plymouth and felt positive about investing more in the city and creating additional employment opportunities for local job seekers.  He added that the Mutley Plains site was a great start to the retailer’s development plans within Plymouth and would give people another reason to shop locally.
