Sainsbury’s wins fight to build supermarket in Whittlesey

A heavily attended public meeting in Whittlesey revealed that Sainsbury’s has won the right to build a supermarket in the town, despite planning officers having recommended that Tesco’s proposal be accepted.  Controversy has surrounded the decision as Sainsbury’s plans involve construction on green belt land, although the chain has vowed to create a large country park behind the supermarket.  However, the council asserted that it had listened to local people in making its choice.

A member of Cambridge County Council stated that the decision was the right one for the town, although there is a possibility that Tesco will appeal the decision through the courts.

A spokesperson from Sainsbury’s indicated that the company is pleased with the decision and that local people had expressed a huge amount of support for the supermarket’s bid.  He added that the town will benefit enormously from new jobs and the creation of the country park.

Tesco expressed its disappointment at the decision, stating that it had spent almost five years planning the project and that its proposal had been the better one.  The supermarket chain stated that it would now take some time to consider its options.
