Sainsburys have been granted permission to open a convenience shop in Bingley following the decision to axe plans for a supermarket in the town.

Bradford Council have finally given the green light for the shop on Main Street which used to be used by the Co-op, next door to Pizza Hut.

Sainsburys still own the former Bradford & Bingley headquarters in the town which is also situated on Main Street which it originally bought to be a Sainsburys superstore but this store was cancelled in their development plan.  Sainsburys are still keen to demolish the old building and sell the site but unfortunately they have been faced with a lot of criticism over their failure to develop the site as they first planned. One of the main reasons for this in the old building was because of Bats who have residence in the building.

The President of the Bingley Chamber of Trade, Howard Martin said it was shame that Pizza Hut looked like it was leaving the town of Bingley but he does feel sure that Sainsburys could increase the number of shoppers to Bingley town centre but he realises that we have to look to the future and at the bigger picture.

The change should have positive effects on the footfall in town and will bring different shoppers due to the products that Sainsburys sell. The residents and community in Bingley are disgruntled towards Sainsburys moving into Bingley because they feel that they were misled over the original development in the old Bradford and Bingley building and especially as that is now a part of town that is very little used and could have done with re developing.

The new Sainsburys store is set to open in February 2015 but staff will be in place by January 2015. The new store is set to create 20 to 25 jobs for local people which will improve the local community and economy.
