A job application is considered successful if the candidate has been offered the position.  However there is more to just landing the dream job – there is of course also getting the right salary for the job.

With the current economic climate many candidates are just grateful to be offered a job, but it is still important to take some time to consider whether the level of remuneration is a fair offer for your experience and skills.

Sometimes the salary is discussed during a job interview, and this can be one of the easiest traps to fall into for a job seeker.  Discussing the salary during an interview is a complicated and intricate process.

Read on to find suggestions on how to negotiate salaries during the interview or after receiving a job offer.

Each job interview will differ from another – some last an hour or so, others can last for an entire afternoon, or as part of an assessment centre they could be an entire week! Only the interviewer will know whether they have been drawn to a particular candidate and are likely to hire that person, in which case they may decide to discuss salaries. It is unlikely that a job offer will be made during an interview, but it is not unheard of so you should be prepared for this before attending any interview.

I’d strongly recommend doing your research on market equivalent salaries prior to interview. That way, should the conversation arise, you aren’t asking for £30k per annum for a £12k per annum job, or vice versa! All the same, aim high, but have the skills behind you to back it all up…
