    Shop Assistant Salary

A shop assistant can involve working in a variety of shops as part of a team working under a manager or management team.  You do not need any qualifications but certain types of shop may have specific requirements eg a chemist may like to see a science GCSE and a toy shop may like to see a childcare GCSE. However this is not a necessity and most shops will employ staff that can demonstrate good Maths and English skills and excellent customer service skills.

Your role will consist of dealing with the public so you will need to be polite, presentable and approachable. You will be answering queries, recommending products and maintaining stock levels in the shop with products. There will be till work and cash handling with some cashing up at the end of your shift and paperwork to complete.  Working as part of a team means you could be doing anything from keeping the shop clean and tidy to accepting deliveries or liaising with head office.

Types of shop work can include pet shop, chemist, bike or toy shops, clothing, furniture or food.  Working as a shop assistant can lead to promotion within the shop or within the company.

    Starting salary: £11,500 – £12,500
    Experienced salary: £15,000
    Senior salary: £24,000 up
