    Hi,

As a bit of background; I’m 29 and been working in local authority for 10 years. Due to the economic crisis, pay freezes have been implemented for the last 5 years as has recruitment and promotion.

I am very ambitious and want to progress both in levels of responsibility and in pay and I now feel as though I’d like to try my hand in the private sector but am faced with no specific desirable skills (other than admin based) as the majority of my training courses and qualifications are public sector specific.

My main problem is that I really have no idea what I want to do with my life. Without trying to answer that question does any one have any advice for me?

Could I just contact all the major companies in a desired area? Should I try and complete a degree in a nondescript area to try and boost my appeal?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Although you say your skills are public sector based, try and think about this a bit more.  Whatever skills you have learnt must be transferrable between sectors.  It may not appear so at first, but have a look at some specific job related questions for the type of employment you are looking for.  You will be surprised at how many of your skills are transferrable
