Tesco has ended doubts over the planned development in Belper by stating that it is still interested in building a new store on the site and that it will be applying for approval of plans for the site it owns in the town centre.
Last week, a spokesman from Tesco contradicted statements from a campaign group against the build and a local councillor that the company was losing interest in the site. Tesco indicated that the site was suitable for a large store and that it believed that local people would be in favour of the new investment and jobs.
Following comments received by the council about the site, it is expected that Tesco will be able to apply for use of the site by the end of 2012, although any planning request must be in keeping with the World Heritage Site and the council’s ambitions to encourage smaller businesses in the area. The company’s proposals should involve a supermarket in the region of 80,000 sq ft
