Tesco are looking to be build a new superstore in Market Harborough on the old Focus DIY site on Rockingham Road but this has been despite concerns from the local people who were against Tesco being built here for a number of reasons.

Some shoppers felt so strongly about the building that the staged an overnight protest because there are already six supermarkets in the area and they do not feel that another one is necessary within walking distance of another supermarket.

Tesco however, have been trying to look on the positive side and by creating 200 jobs in the area it will improve the local area for the people to gain new employment or a new challenge in their life.

At the planning committee there were 5 members of the committee in favour of the new store and 5 against the new store but the casting vote which was made by the chairwoman was in favour of the new store being built.

During the meeting there was a BBC reporter there, Tim Parker, who said there were 70 members of the public and the room erupted in shouts of objection as people aired their views. One local businessman, Ian Joule, actually slept in the town centre overnight because he feels so strongly that the supermarket will ruin the town and wanted to stage a protest.
One person who made a presentation against the store concluded that although the town is growing, we do not need another supermarket in walking distance from another.

At the moment, Tesco do not have date as to when they will start building as they foresee some legal challenges yet to come from the supermarkets chains competitors and once building can commence it will take approximately one year before customers begin to be served in their store.
