    New Tesco for Aldeburgh

The application to construct the new Tesco store on the outskirts of Aldeburgh has caused angry debate in the east Suffolk town in the midst of mounting anxiety about supermarket growth threatening local traders.

The plan submitted by developers Pigeon on the location of the former Crossways garage is for a 2,800 square foot Tesco supermarket, with five flats above and nearly 20 permanent parking spaces.

But after a long debate, councillors voted 5-4 for the development to go ahead. Further deliberation of safeguards for flood avoidance and issues related to growing traffic are conditions of the go-ahead.

Around two-thirds of the homes in Aldeburgh are second homes, many owned by London-based people – one of the top proportions in the UK for a town that has just a quarter of a million residents. Supporters of the Tesco plans, including poorer families, welcome a cheaper shopping opportunity and claim that the campaign against Tesco is being motivated by well-off second-home owners.

The new Tesco store will create 20 new jobs. Last year there were parallel protests against the arrival of a new Tesco in nearby Southwold. And in Saxmundham, which fought off a Tesco superstore more than 10 years ago, a smaller Tesco did open last year following a successful planning application.

I’m going to assume that if this is only going to create 20 jobs it must be a Tescos Express? – one of the little ones open 6pm-11pm?

If its needed, then yes of course it should go ahead.  We’ve had a fight in the village against a similar (but not the same) supermarket who are trying to build in the village, we dont need it! we have 2 already!
