Becoming a nurse is a very rewarding career and one which many nurses get a real job satisfaction from. To be a nurse you will need to follow a path of training which is very detailed and thorough and involves both theoretical and practical work related experience where you will be assessed by a qualified nurse and scored accordingly.

Nurses work very hard from the moment they choose to be a nurse as a career. The training is hard but so is the work once fully trained.  Nurses can work in a hospital setting on different wards determined by the area of need at that moment and also by the individual’s specialism if any.  Nurses can work with: mentally ill patients, in an A&E dealing with emergency patients, working with children, the elderly and many other specialist areas of nursing.  If you don’t work in a hospital environment you could work as a Nurse in a doctor’s surgery or in a school as school nurse or in a hospice or similar environment or as a private nurse working for a private client.

    #1 Rewarding

Being a Nurse can be a very rewarding career path. It gives you the opportunity to see patients at a difficult time in their health following an accident or an illness and making a difference to their lives for that period of time which can be very rewarding and satisfying.

#2 Career and skills for life

Training to be a nurse is exceptionally hard work putting in many training hours before being qualified and even afterwards constantly updating your skills and working long hours. If you train as a nurse from an early age there is no reason given the variety and challenges that this cannot be your career choice for life.

    #3 Variety

Working as a nurse can be a very varied career working in many different departments and even specialising in certain areas. No 2 days are the same in a nursing environment and depending on where you are a Nurse you could work in many different settings from a NHS hospital to a private hospital to a patient’s home environment.

    #4 Kind and Caring nature

If you have a kind and caring nature then being a nurse is a good career choice. As well as this you will need a great degree of patience and excellent listening skills. You will want to help people and ensure that they get provided with the right care and attention to nurse them to better health.

#5 Following in a family members footsteps

Maybe you have grown up with a family member being in Nursing and it’s a natural thing to go into. Following in a family member’s footsteps can be an easy career choice as long as it is also something that you want to do and not that you feel you should do.

#6 Wanting to give something back

Feeling that you want to give something back to the health service, perhaps they have helped you over a period of time and you gained the interest from there.

#7 Like a structured company such as the NHS

Nurses in a hospital environment need to be able to follow strict rules and procedures in terms of how treatment is assessed and given to patients as well as what nurses can do and what they cannot do during this time. There can be a lot of red tape in the National Health Service and this can be very frustrating for many nurses so this needs to be overcome and a good nurse needs to be able to work round it focusing on patient care in line with any rules and procedures.

    #8 Hands on practical roles

If you are interested in a hands on and practical role then nursing is certainly that. You will need to have good physical strength for moving patients, equipment etc and no two jobs are the same making the differences in tasks ever changing.

#9 Enjoy working to qualifications and education

If you like education and working towards qualifications then working as a Nurse will also give you this as you will regularly need to update your skills to keep in line with the correct qualifications, procedures and processes expected as a Nurse.

    #10 Interest in Medicine

If you have grown up having a keen interest in medicine and working in a medical environment then it may be a natural progression to aim towards being a nurse or doctor. If you are unable to be a doctor then working as a Nurse and progressing that way is an excellent career choice.
