    Volunteer Salary

Volunteers work for free as they volunteer their time in exchange for the satisfaction of helping a charity or good cause. This can be a great way to learn some skills and develop your portfolio.

However volunteer organisers (also known as volunteer managers or co-ordinators) do get paid because their job is a key one to the charity. The role involves many different tasks so you need to be able to multi task and organise effectively. You will be responsible for recruiting volunteers, placing them within an organisation, training them to do the role then mentoring them on an ongoing basis. You will need to be able to provide them with advice and resources to enable them to do their job well.  Unpaid volunteers may be working in hospitals, charities, social service projects and voluntary organisations. You need to ensure the volunteer will add value to the organisation and also feel valued in their role.  You will also be responsible for financial planning such as managing budgets and organising fundraising events or promotional occasions to raise funds and awareness of the business.

There are no compulsory courses you need to have completed but having previous experience of volunteering would be beneficial. Courses like the Community Volunteering Qualifications (CVQ) would be advantageous as would a BTEC, HND or degree in social science subjects. Demonstrating marketing and advertising skills alongside fundraising and coaching skills would help your application.

    Starting salary: £16,000
    Experienced salary: £25,000
    Senior salary: £30,000 – £35,000

This seems a bit confusing – if you’re volunteering, you’re working for nothing, right?

I do get the idea, though, and I’ve actually seen many vacancies for jobs working for charities etc. They can be very rewarding even if you’re getting paid, and they can be a lot of fun, too. I know some of them work on commission only, so watch out for that.
