    Good question

To me, a gardener is someone who comes along, mows your lawn, tarts up your garden generally (pruning etc) where as a Horticulurilst would be more the plants, breeding of them etc

Horticulture is the science of plants and so goes beyond gardening. It is more intensely involved in breeding new plants, planning gardens and conserving species. It is possible for a horticulturalist to work as a gardener but they may also work as a grower, designer, technical advisor. They could work with soil, weeds, crops, flowers or trees to name but a few. They could be involved in plant nurseries, botanical gardens or even work in laboratories on the science side of things.
