Dear Mr Adams

Please accept this letter as formal notice that I wish to resign from my position as Telephone Support Adviser within ABC Solutions, with effect from the end of the day.

It is my understanding that I am not required by my contract to give notice of my intentions, although I intend to leave at the end of my shift today. If possible, could you please arrange for my final pay to be paid to me within five working days, along with any untaken leave entitlement, as per our agreement?

In the several years I have worked with you, I have enjoyed my employment, and feel I have learned a lot that I can take with me. Many thanks for all of this, and I in turn wish you every success in the future.

At the end of the day, I will surrender my keys and ensure they are entrusted to someone else as per company policy. Should you require any additional information from me, do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours sincerely

Jane Brown

Yes I like those letters, although I must say I believe it to be very rare indeed that people don’t have notice periods built into their contracts

    @ Glenys,

In some states in the US, employment is "at will’ which means no notice is required but notice is usually given as a courtesy.

Some states in the US are ‘at will’ employment which allows a person to resign at will or the employer to terminate at will hence no notice is required although it is a courtesy to provide ‘some notice’.

Food for thought, most employers usually terminate at will and rarely offer any courtesy notice  🙁

If you are on a temporary contract you could stop work immediately. It is likely that you will be employed on a daily basis and so either party could terminate the employment immediately. However, doing this would not be looked upon favourably and so it could have a detrimental effect on your chances of getting a good reference or any other work form that company or through the agency that you were working for.
