If you have a degree in IT, science or maths then make sure that you mention it in your covering letter as well as any related qualifications especially in Java, Oracle, Linux, NET, C++, Visual Basic or Smalltalk. You may be able to succeed with an non IT related degree but you will need to show that you have experience in software. You will need to keep your skills up to date and so if you have no recent qualifications, you will need to show how you are keeping up to date with the latest software developments.

Skills in programming should include traditional methods such as Java and Visual Basic as well as web based development. Make sure that if specific programs are needed that you can show you have adequate knowledge of them. Obviously work experience is important too. Any relevant experience should be mentioned, but anything within the industry you plan to go in to could also be helpful. You will also need to have good team working, organisation and communications skills and so these should be demonstrated in your letter. You need to be able to work with the business and / or customers to make sure that their software needs are answered in light of the needs of the business as a whole.

Dear [Insert Name]

Application for Vacancy for Software Developer

I write with respect to your job advertisement on Learnist.org for an experienced Software Developer.

During the past 2 years working amongst a small team of software developers, I have gained extensive knowledge of installing, maintaining and troubleshooting and this, together with the qualifications I have gained makes me an ideal candidate.

I note from your website that your company has recently achieved targets in securing additional clients and I consider I would be a true asset to your company with my excellent software development skills and ability to communicate well with colleagues and clients. My greatest strengths are being able to write and code programmes in accordance with a brief, investigate and analyse defects and perform well under pressure.

Please find enclosed a copy of my CV for your consideration. I would be delighted to have the opportunity to meet with you to discuss further the job role and my previous work history.

Yours sincerely,

Your Name
