The most important point when answering this question is to think about it thoroughly. This should be done well in advance of the interview and the full impact of potential time away from home thought through and discussed with your family. If you come to the conclusion that you would be willing to do some travelling then you should think about your limits. If you state in the interview that you would be willing to travel and don’t lay down any restrictions, you could end up in an uncomfortable position where you are being asked to do more than you would want to.
If the interviewer asks this question and you have an idea of the amount of travelling you would be willing to do, but don’t know what the company would expect of you. There is nothing wrong in asking the interviewer to clarify how much travelling would be involved. Ensuring that neither party gets the wrong impression will reduce the chance of friction should you be hired.
An example answer could be:
I am willing to travel but would have some requirements. If the travelling was going to involve an overnight stay I would need to be told at least 2 days in advance. Any longer and I would need at least a week. However, I would unfortunately be unable to spend more than two weeks away from home at a time due to domestic commitments.
Although this may seem as if you are being a little too forward for an interview, the interviewer will appreciate the fact that you have given this issue consideration and your answer should convince the interviewer that you would make good on what you have said. Many people would have responded simply with yes. However, when it came down to it a large portion of those people will find that they have a change of heart at the realism of what travelling can entail.
