There are things you can do to show that your past is behind you. For example, volunteering is a superb way to give something back to society and it shows employees that you’re willing to put yourself out there.
Remember as well that you don’t have to tell an employee absolutely everything about your past. For example, if you have a minor drug offense and years have passed since the conviction, it isn’t your responsibility to bring this up with a perspective employer. The same goes in situation where you are convicted in juvenile court but are now applying for a job as an adult.
If an employer knows of your criminal record, that doesn’t always mean you don’t stand a chance of getting the job. For the majority of employers, it is illegal to immediately disqualify someone on that basis. You must emphasise how much you’ve changed since the conviction. Discuss your achievements since the conviction, the obstacles you have overcome, and most importantly show that you’re a hard worker and reliable. It’s often a good idea to have some solid references in this situation as they may persuade someone to take a chance on you. The reality is we all make mistakes. Everyone has done things in the past that they regret and it’s unfortunate that for some people it stays with them.
