Accountant Salary – What are the average pay rates? How much salary can I expect for an Accountant job in the UK?
An accountant is in charge of controlling finances and producing financial records and reports. You can work within the public sector or the private sector. In the public sector your role is to assess how a company’s budget can be spent, monitoring cash flow, preparing costings for new projects and reporting all financial expenditure or planned expenditure. Within the private sector, you would be providing accountancy services to business clients, advising them on how to improve their cash flow and expenditure and handling their tax and accounts. To be an accountant, you would need to have an analytical mind and a logical and accurate approach to financial figures. Attention to detail is key as you will be trawling through numbers and looking for inaccuracies and errors.
To be become an accountant you need to be a member of a recognised professional body. They all require different levels of qualifications to become a member but it will involve many exams to prove you can effectively advise people on their finances. The ACCA is a very popular professional body for private accountants and this involves studying for their ACCA qualification. If you want to become a public sector accountant the most popular body is CIPFA.
Starting salary: £18,000 – £24,000
Experienced salary: £28,000 – £50,000

Everyone seems to have the impression that accountants are paid loads, but from the figures given here, I can see that it’s only really the senior accountants who are on the big money. I suppose the important thing for accountants is to build up a good reputation, as honesty is key in this job.
