When looking for jobs at one of the supermarket chains it is important to do your research to establish which supermarket you want to work with and which suits your career and career development the best. Most of the supermarket chains are similar in their approaches to food just target different customers usually dependent on location.
#1 Tesco
Tesco is a team of over 530,000 people in 12 markets interested in providing service
and the best value to their customers. They have over 3,000 stores within the UK and launched their own reward programme “The Clubcard” in 1996 allowing their customers to earn points whilst they shop giving them discounts and money off their shopping.
They have branched away from supermarket only and deal with finance and mobile and they are constantly looking for new innovations and differences to their brand.

#2 Asda
Asda has more than 500 stores across the UK, owned by the parent group Walmart which is a US based company. Asda is not just a food retailer but also specialised in their own clothing range (George Clothing) and their own home range as well as finance, banking and mobile services.
Asda like to operate under their price guarantee across all of their products and services. Asda’s head office operates from Leeds, West Yorkshire.

#3 Sainsbury’s
Sainsburys was born by John James Sainsbury in London in 1869.
There are approximately 1,106 supermarkets in total and they employ over 157,000 people.
Sainsburys stores are usually at a central point in a town or town centre based making their stores easily accessible whether driving or using public transport. As with all the supermarkets they target shoppers of the mid to high price range but in recent years they have allowed themselves to be more competitive and brought in a lower price (Basics) range to open up their custom to all shoppers.

#4 Waitrose
Typically known as an expensive supermarket for the affluent shoppers, until more recently been mainly located in the South of England especially in and around London.
Waitrose prides themselves on ensuring they know where their produce comes from, getting to know the farmers, suppliers and picking the best local produce they can. They believe in treating their suppliers fairly and support Fair Trade.
Waitrose is part of the John Lewis partnership and has been in action since 1929.
#5 Morrison’s
Morrison’s began in 1899 in Bradford as a Market stall and today is the fourth largest food retailer with over 400 stores and 132,000 colleagues helping to serve the UK’s customers up and down the country. In 2008 Morrison’s won retailer of the year and more recently we have seen Morrison’s begin online shopping through their website.
Originally only based in the North of England they now operate in a lot of major towns in the North and South.
#6 Marks and Spencer
Marks and Spencer operates out of 766 UK stores and 418 International Stores in both high street and shopping centre and outlet locations.
M&S has always been fondly known as good quality and they also provide excellent service through their Simply Food sections, clothing and also financial products.
M&S began at Kirkgate Market in Leeds back in 1884 and still has strong links in this area today. Their plan for further growth opens up further opportunities in International waters allowing M&S to have greater access to their customers.
#7 Aldi
Aldi’s company slogan is Spend a little, live a lot! They pride themselves on buying the best products they can at low prices which is passed onto their customers. They buy in large quantities reducing the overall spend and ensuring that this is passed down to their customers.
They look for born leaders to work at aldi, people who are passionate about food and retail and wand to develop their careers in a fast paced environment. ALDI are currently on an expansion plan opening up new stores in different locations each month.
#8 Lidl
Lidl goes back to 1930 when they were a German wholesale store and today they are one of the largest retailers in Europe. Lidl came to the UK in 1994 and today they have over 590 stores.
Lidl operate a friendly customer service with a money back guarantee to their customers. They look for committed employees who want to work to high standards and drive their business forward both in the UK and Internationally.
#9 Co-op
The co-op is most famously known for a small local store where you can pick up your every day essentials such as bread, milk etc. Today the store is so much more with some much bigger supermarket type stores and the range of produce every increasing to include ready meals and dinner deals.
They are constantly striving to meet the needs of the customers and the communities that they serve. Began in Rochdale in 1844, the bought the Somerfield Chain in 2009 and today they are more known for banking and other financial products. The
Co-operative group as a whole is the UK’s largest mutual business.
#10 Booths
Began in June 1847, they now employ over 3,000 people in 28 stores in the UK. Their stores are originally in the North of England and Booths takes pride in growing at a natural pace which is working well. They are keen to employ the right people as they truly believe that the key to success is the right people on board in their team.
They have many regular customers within their stores who come in and see the same faces for a chat more like a family shopping experience. They like to ensure that they staff are fully trained and supported receiving annual reviews and regular meetings with their managers.
