What would be your answer if you ever been asked “Are you overqualified for this job?” interview question. How would you know if you were overqualified?
Believe it or not this happens more than you realise. A company looks at a CV and decides not to interview because they think they are over qualified which in turn means they will not stay very long with their company.
You have got to the interview stage when this question is being asked so now you have the chance to turn it around.
There are various ways of saying you are not over qualified but how about tell them that instead of looking at it that way they should look at it as though you have a lot of experience that can be brought to their company.
Try and turn it into a positive (which it is) and tell them to concentrate on your skills and abilities and how rather than being over qualified you have merely just tried to stay on top of learning and keeping up to date.
Depending on the job for example if the job you are being interviewed for is more hands on than what you have done recently then explain that although you have had more hands off roles you are very keen to become more involved like in the past and a hands on role is what you are now seeking.
Use flattery – tell them that this job interests you so much that you would be happy signing an agreement to say that you will not leave for a minimum of 12 months.
Another depending on situation but if you are in the later stages of your life you can tell your interviewer that as your family is all grown up now you are no longer eager for the big job title and role and are now looking to do something you enjoy and are good at.
Consider your options carefully but just remember that you have made it to interview stage!
